Trompe l'oeil is a style of painting, whereby architectural features are included in the painting, leaving viewers to wonder whether they are seeing part of the architecture of the building at which they are looking, or whether they are merely seeing more of the painting. Hence the name Trompe l'oeil, a French phrase meaning "deceive the eye".

In the photo to the right, this bathroom in suburban Kansas City, Missouri has been designed to transport the viewer to the Scottish Highlands. Some of the features are real; some are painted. As you move your mouse over the photo, you will notice that there are areas on which you may click. If you are wondering whether something is real or just a painting, click on that object, and you will find out.
